Provincial Government Celebrates Small Business Week
The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, today recognized October 16-22 as Small Business Week.
"Small businesses play an important role in Newfoundland and Labrador's economy by supporting employment,
strong communities and a diversified economy. Our government is proud to provide numerous programs and
services to help them succeed. During Small Business Week, we celebrate those entrepreneurs and innovators
who believed in their business ideas and, in turn, created jobs for people that help the economy of
their community."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development
Small businesses are essential to the province's overall development and are integral to the growth of the provincial economy. In Newfoundland and Labrador, small to medium-sized businesses employ almost 40 per cent of the workforce. The Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development provides a wide array of services and financial support to small and medium-sized businesses, including counselling, repayable and non-repayable financing options, enterprise promotion, and export development and trade.
"The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Community Business Development Corporations is proud
to assist small business with loans, business planning and training, and to meet the needs of small
businesses. We recognize the importance of small businesses and encourage entrepreneurship as a
worthwhile option that can benefit innovators and their communities."
- Roseanne Leonard, Managing Director, Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Community Business
Development Corporations
Small Business Week was established by the Business Development Bank of Canada in 1981 and recognizes the outstanding contribution of Canada's small and medium-sized businesses.
