Supporting Continued Growth of Tourism Industry
Collaborative Marketing Efforts Benefit Outfitting Industry
The Provincial Government continues to work closely with the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association (NLOA) to grow the outfitting sector and to effectively market the variety of hunting and angling package experiences available in the province.
"Home to one of the last great wilderness areas in the world, Newfoundland and Labrador is the ultimate hunting
and angling destination. We have a unique industry, offering unspoiled wildlife resources navigated by expert guides that
are passionate about sharing their knowledge and experiences with others. The consistent efforts of the outfitting industry
to develop and showcase Newfoundland and Labrador as a preferred destination are invaluable to growing the entire tourism
industry."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development and Minister
Responsible for the Research & Development Corporation
In Budget 2016 the Provincial Government provided $100,000 in operational support for NLOA. As well, Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism consults with NLOA on the annual provincial advertising campaign promoting the province as a desired hunting and angling destination. This year, 23 local operators participated in this campaign by offering travel packages for moose, caribou and black bear hunting, as well as Atlantic salmon/Ouanaiche and trout fishing.
The department has also partnered with the NLOA to implement a specific sector focused Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) initiative for the outfitting industry in the province whereby officials worked with 18 NLOA members to identify issues and opportunities impacting their growth. Follow up action plans including links to programs and services to help address issues were completed with individual operators. BTCRD also facilitated an Opportunity Management session during the NLOA Annual General Meeting which resulted in further engagement of industry stakeholders.
"The outfitting industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is having one of the most successful years to date. Much of this
growth and success is due in part to the wonderful partnership between the NLOA and the Department of Business, Tourism,
Culture and Rural Development. The financial and human resource support for our industry that comes from BTCRD is second
to none and this partnership is key to the success of our organization and the success of our industry We look forward to
continuing to work with BTCRD for many years to come."
- Cory Foster, Executive Director, Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association
As part of the overall provincial marketing strategy for hunting and angling, NLOA and Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism continue to work together throughout the season to host various outdoor travel writers to showcase the variety of species and experiences available throughout the province. Some examples of those that visited the province recently include: Ontario Out of Doors for Atlantic salmon and Outdoor Option TV for bear hunting. This fall, Woods 'n Water will visit to showcase moose and black bear hunting experiences and Wild Edge TV are here to feature the Newfoundland and Labrador triple hunting experience - caribou, moose and black bear.
