RDC Now Accepting Applications for 2017 High School Enrichment Awards

The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) is now accepting applications for the 2017 Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards competition. RISE Awards provide Level II high school students in Newfoundland and Labrador with the opportunity to attend research-related enrichment programs in Canada and the United States. The awards are open to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who will be completing Level II by June 2017.

"The Research Inspired Student Enrichment Awards program is designed to cultivate a new generation of R&D leaders that will foster a culture of innovation and strengthen Newfoundland and Labrador's economy for the future. Principals, teachers, guidance counsellors, parents and guardians are encouraged to promote the awards and inspire high-achieving students to explore opportunities in research and development."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for the Research & Development Corporation

Ranging in value from $7,000 to $14,000, the awards will be granted to a maximum of 15 students. Award recipients will attend one of three prestigious research-inspired enrichment programs during the summer of 2017: the Research Science Institute based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program at the University of Toronto, and the Boston Leadership Institute in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

"The RISE Awards provide high school students with the opportunity to work closely with top scientists, researchers and teachers on real R&D projects, and gain skills and knowledge that will benefit them beyond their school days. I am confident this program is inspiring passion in research excellence and providing students with fundamental learning experiences that could launch exciting careers in research and development."
- Mark Ploughman, Acting CEO of the Research & Development Corporation

Since 2011, RDC has provided 69 RISE Awards to high school students from across Newfoundland and Labrador.

"I encourage students to apply to RISE because it is an incredible opportunity to learn about new fields of science and engineering. Without RISE, I never would have gotten the chance to attend the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program. It was an unforgettable experience. I loved learning more about research and development at one of Canada's best engineering schools."
- Erin Maher, 2016 RISE Award recipient, The Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program

Further details on the enrichment programs, awards structure and applications are available online at //www.rdc.org/form/research-inspired-student-enrichment-awards/ . The application deadline is November 3, 2016.
