Promoting Our Provinces Culture and Heritage

Operational Funding Supports to Summer Literary Festivals

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to a rich literary community. In recognition of the importance of supporting this sector, the Provincial Government has provided operational funding to two of the provinces most highly respected writing festivals: the 2016 Winterset in Summer Literary Festival and the Writers at Woody Point Festival.

The Provincial Government is committed to promoting and supporting cultural events throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Both of these highly-anticipated literary festivals never fail to deliver. They celebrate our rich literary culture, encourage local readers, introduce new writers to the audience and increase cultural activities throughout the province. Year after year, these events continue to support the local economy, promoting Newfoundland and Labrador culture, while also attracting visitors and tourists. We are happy to support them.
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Writers at Woody Point Festival presents established writers and musicians from this province alongside high profile national and international writers and musicians. The festival features musical events, innovative theatre, multi-media shows, film, interviews, guided walks, a themed art show, and a variety of intimate readings in several spaces. The festival opened on August 16 and runs until August 21.

Since 2004, the community of Woody Point has played host to one of the province's leading annual cultural events. The Writers at Woody Point Festival is a tremendous showcase of the abundant artistic and literary talent found here in Newfoundland and Labrador. My government is a strong supporter of the arts, and as the MHA for Humber Gros Morne, I am very pleased to see operational funding allocated for this renowned festival.
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Humber-Gros Morne

"The continued support we have received from the CEDP program has allowed us to consistently produce a quality festival that brings the best in writers and musicians to Woody Point. Not only does this attract visitors who greatly contribute to the local economy, it provides a cultural opportunity that enhances the lives of those in these small communities, contributing significantly to their sustainability."
- Gary Noel, Executive Director, Writers at Woody Point

The Winterset in Summer Literary Festival was established in 2001 to pay tribute to Sandra Fraser Gwyn, award winning Newfoundland author and journalist who, throughout her professional and private life, passionately promoted the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. Each year, the festival features a variety of activities such as readings, songwriters circles, storytelling and more.

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to one of the finest literary traditions in the country. Festivals like Winterset allow the next generation of up-and-coming writers to rub shoulders with established members of Newfoundland and Labrador's acclaimed literary community. This nurturing environment ensures that our province's vibrant literary culture will continue to thrive. My sincere thanks to the organizers of this year's Winterset in Summer Literary Festival.
- Colin Holloway, MHA for Terra Nova

The 2016 Winterset in Summer Literary Festival marks the 15th year of celebrating the best in writers and writing in our province. This journey would not have been possible without the support - both financial and advisory - of the Cultural Economic Development Program. In addition to promoting writing and other forms of artistic expression, the festival has played a key role in the growth of tourism on the Eastport Peninsula. This years festival is another sold out event and we thank our partners for their support.
- Pat Parsons, Chair, Winterset in Summer Festival
