Celebrating the History of the Atlantic Charter

Atlantic Charter Foundation Inc. Receives Funding for 75th Anniversary

August 14, 2016, marks the 75th Anniversary of the Atlantic Charter, a joint-declaration that detailed the goals and aims of the Allied powers concerning the First World War and the post-war world. The Atlantic Charter was released by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill after a four-day meeting in Newfoundland in 1941. In recognition of this historical event, the Provincial Government provided Atlantic Charter Foundation Inc. $11,232 to assist with the planning of anniversary celebrations currently ongoing in St. John's and Ship Harbour, August 11-14.

"The Atlantic Charter laid out a vision for the post-war world with measures of free trade, self-determination, disarmament, and collective security, inspiring colonial subjects the world over. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to support the Atlantic Charter Foundation and the many celebrations which honour the 75th anniversary."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Seventy-fifth anniversary celebrations include a variety of events, such as a welcome reception at Government House in St. Johns, a commemorative event at the Atlantic Charter Memorial in Ship Harbour, a community garden party, and a theatrical performance based on the historic Atlantic Charter meeting in 1941, held at the Placentia Arts Centre. "The Atlantic Charter was an agreement of global significance. The signing of this agreement just outside of Ship Harbour adds to the already rich history of the Placentia Bay region. I am pleased to see Provincial Government support being provided to mark the 75th anniversary of this landmark historical event."
- Sherry Gambin Walsh, MHA for Placentia - St. Mary's

Funding was provided through the Provincial Government's Regional Development Program, which provides support to organizations for the development and implementation of economic initiatives that encourage regional and industry development, diversification and innovation.
