Planning for Sustainable Forest Management
Dates Set to Discuss Five-year Forest Management Operating Plans
Public meetings will be held in various locations across the province this month to support the development of five-year operating plans in several forest management districts.
"Our forest resource is important to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador and is of significant cultural and societal importance. Five-year operating plans identify the groups that use the forest resource and are an important part of sustainable forest management. I encourage stakeholders to attend these meetings and become a part of the planning process."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency
Under the Forestry Act, the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency is legislated to meet with public stakeholders while developing five-year operating plans for forest management districts and zones in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The meetings give the general public the opportunity to provide input on the potential environmental effects of proposed forestry activities on the social, economic and recreational conditions associated with the forest resource. The process is consistent with the Provincial Government's sustainable forest management strategy and the principle of sustainable development.
Operating plans describe proposed forestry activities over a five-year period and include:
- The volume and area of timber to be harvested;
- Length and location of primary forest access roads to be constructed;
- Location and extent of area to be silviculturally treated;
- Timber harvesting methods to be employed;
- Location of operating areas; and
- Location, nature and extent of decommissioning and rehabilitation activities scheduled for a parcel of forest land.
Information on meeting dates, locations and times is included in the Backgrounder below.
