Strategic Investments Strengthen Provincial Film Industry

Creativity and Strategic Business Practices Mix at Provincial Film Industry Events

The provincial film industry is positioning itself for future success with the support of $25,000 from the Provincial Government. Funding was provided to the 2016 Scene and Heard Film Industry Conference, which concluded this past weekend in St. Johns. Scene and Heard was hosted by St. Johns International Womens Film and Video Festival Inc. with funding provided through the Business Development Support Program.

Our government is proud to support the Scene and Heard Film Industry Conference. My department has worked closely with St. Johns International Womens Film and Video Festival Inc. in order to diversify and meet the dynamic needs of the film and media sectors. I am confident this investment contributed to a successful conference this year, and that the networking and connections that were made will greatly contribute to future success across the provinces film industry for the long term.
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Scene and Heard conference provides an opportunity for film and media creators to participate in professional development opportunities while focusing on the business of filmmaking. Scene and Heard addresses areas of concern for the local film industry, including financing models, entering new markets, diversifying product offerings, and technical skills enhancement and training. The conference is timed for filmmakers and digital content creators to connect six months prior to the St. Johns International Womens Film and Video Festival, with the goal of fostering new work, expanding networks and building upon strengths.

Scene and Heard offers members of the local film, television and digital media industry a variety of world-class professional development opportunities. Coupled with our other industry events, which also receive support from the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, these workshops, panels and networking events are crucial to our province's screen media industries.
- Noreen Golfman, Founder and Chair, St. John's International Women's Film Festival

Established in 1989 to support and promote women filmmakers, St. Johns International Womens Film Festival Inc. produces several screenings, workshops and other events throughout the year and around the province, culminating in a five day film festival held in October in St. Johns. One of the longest running womens film festivals in the world, the event now attracts over 4,000 participants. Additional information on Scene and Heard can be found at: www.womensfilmfestival.com.
