St. John�s Convention Centre Celebrates Grand Opening

On June 15, the City of St. John�s, in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, officially opened the newly redeveloped St. John�s Convention Centre, following an expansion valued at approximately $70 million. The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, attended the official re-opening of the convention centre.

�The Provincial Government is very pleased to see the newly-expanded St. John�s Convention Centre open for business. This state-of-the-art facility will provide tremendous economic benefit to the city and the province as a whole. Not only will it attract major conferences and conventions, bringing in new visitors to St. John�s � which in turn will positively impact our tourism sector � it will also provide more opportunities for local residents and businesses to avail of the many new amenities and a variety of events the convention centre will offer.�

Conventions, trade shows and a variety of industry events are a significant part of our lucrative tourism industry and having a versatile facility that can host a multitude of events gives tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador a competitive edge in the conventions market.

The new centre features 10 meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen, a large ballroom and a junior ballroom with a combined capacity for up to 1,700 people for a sit down dinner.The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the Federal Government have contributed a combined $28.8 million to the new convention centre.
