Province Committed to Preserving Heritage Sector

Heritage Organizations Receive Over $830,000 in Operational Support

Through Budget 2016, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will assist over 90 organizations, associations, museums, archives and historical societies preserve the province's heritage with an investment of over $830,000 through the Provincial Government's Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

"Our province's history is something we are very proud of and we continue to preserve and protect our heritage for future generations. This operational funding will help celebrate the province's rich culture by enhancing and exhibiting heritage resources, while contributing to economic development in all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Provincial Government is pleased to support these organizations that enrich our province."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Budget 2016 will see the implementation of minimum standards for community museums and archives as eligibility requirements for heritage operational support. This is the culmination of a three-year partnership between the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, the Museums Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives.

"Minimum standards are fundamental to all heritage organizations because they define what we do, why we do it, how we manage our collections, and how we will meet visitor expectations. This project will provide a much needed benchmark both for sector training/advisory and Cultural Economic Development Program funding.'
- Nicole Penney, Vice President, Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives
