Investing in Infrastructure to Strengthen Communities

Federal and Provincial Governments Support Expansion of Heart's Delight-Islington Marina

The Heart's Delight-Islington Marina Committee Inc. is better positioned to take advantage of the growing non-resident and recreational boating market through a combined investment of $220,193 by the Provincial and Federal Governments. Funding will be used to support Phase 3 of the marina development and includes upgrading marina safety and adding extra berths to meet the growing demand particularly by out of province boaters.

Funding was announced today in Heart's Delight-Islington by the Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Member of Parliament for Bonavista - Burin - Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); along with the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for the District of Carbonear - Trinity - Bay de Verde, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development.

The James G. Reid Memorial Marina is strategically located in Trinity Bay. Offering pristine cruising conditions and renowned for its striking coastlines, the region is emerging as a choice destination for recreational and non-resident boaters.

An investment of $70,669 will be provided through the Job Creation Partnerships Program to hire five people for 22 weeks to assist with the Heart's Delight Islington Marina Project. The program supports projects that create jobs to provide unemployed, EI-insured participants with opportunities to gain meaningful work experience. Through the Regional Development Fund, The Provincial Government is also investing $88,000.

We are seeing a growing recreational boating industry in this region which enjoys using the Marina to explore the beautiful waters and coastlines of Trinity Bay. Trinity Bay is a prime location for tourism, and any opportunity we get to bring more people to the region is certainly a wonderful thing."

The expansion of the James G. Reid Memorial Marina will facilitate future growth of the facility as the committee seeks to increase its membership base and attract local recreational mariners.
