Celebrating the Success of Artists

Newfoundland and Labrador Craftsperson Wins 2016 Atlantic Canada Craft Award for Excellence in Product Design

Urve Manuel, a glass artist working in western Newfoundland, has been awarded the 2016 Atlantic Canada Craft Award for Excellence for Product Design in a ceremony held on February 7 as part of the 39th annual Atlantic Craft Trade Show in Halifax.

The Excellence in Product Design award recognizes a producer who has demonstrated outstanding quality and creativity in the design of a product. Ms. Manuel was nominated by the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Congratulations to Urve Manuel on winning this prestigious award and to the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador for nominating her. This demonstrates once again the creativity and excellence of our artisans and the valuable contribution they make to our culture and our economy.
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Inspired by the natural world and island culture, Ms. Manuels work reflects her environment with kiln-formed glass salmon, trout, codfish and caribou that are shaped to suggest movement. Ms. Manuels latest work explores pate de verre, a technique used to create delicate one of a kind vessels that look and feel like sugar and are created using a colour palette springing from the sea and the shore.

Urve Manuel is a professional craft maker with a thirst for new skills and a spirit undaunted by the greatest technical challenge. Her energy and enthusiasm for her career in craft are inspirational for emerging and established craftspeople alike. The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador was honoured to make the nomination, and thrilled at the win. Urves work shows an excellence in product design that makes us all proud.
- Anne Manuel, Executive Director, Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador

Recognizing the benefits from tourism and craft partnerships, Urve established a studio and craft shop in Rocky Harbour in 2014. Located in the midst of Gros Morne National Park, visitors can watch her create pieces derived from the environment in which she lives and works.
