Strengthening Newfoundland and Labrador's Work Force
Minister Announces Funding for Job Creation Initiatives
The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced more than $4.7 million in combined funding for job creation programs. Minister Byrne provided details of projects under the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) and Targeted Initiative for Older Workers (TIOW) at an event in Grand Falls-Windsor this morning.
"The Job Creation Partnerships and Targeted Initiative for Older Workers programs help Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians gain meaningful work experience through a variety of community-based projects. These important
initiatives help people acquire new skills, increasing their chances of successfully finding ongoing
employment."
- The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour
Funding provided through the JCP will see $2.9 million go towards 77 community-based projects that will employ over 300 individuals, as part of the second round of approvals for 2016-17. The program is funded through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement. A full list of approvals of the second round of JCPs for 2016-17 can be found at: www.aesl.gov.nl.ca/lmda/jcp.html.
Included in today's announced JCP funding is approximately $20,300 to the Exploits Trailnet Inc., which is operated by a group of volunteers who help improve the safety and sustainability of snowmobile trail networks in central Newfoundland and Labrador.
"This program allows for the improvement of safety and sustainability of hundreds of kilometres of trail networks
in Central Newfoundland and Labrador. These vast trail networks help connect many people throughout our communities,
so the opportunity to expand our reach is an exciting venture."
- David Noel, Volunteer, Exploits Trailnet Inc.
The TIOW is a cost-shared initiative between the provincial and federal governments which supports unemployed workers aged 55-64 who live in communities affected by significant downsizing or closures, or who are experiencing high unemployment rates. The total amount of funding for the TIOW projects in 2016-17 is $1,878,212. A breakdown of the projects and associated funding is included in the backgrounder below.
The announced funding for the TIOW program includes $139,018 to the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor for employment readiness training for hospitality and retail.
"This program will help train older workers in the hospitality and retail industries - sectors that are very important
to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador. We look forward to helping these older workers reintegrate into the labour
market and gain even more skills and experience. This funding will help Grand Falls-Windsor achieve its goals of
supporting small business and helping older workers get back into the workforce"
- His Worship, Barry Manuel, Mayor, Town of Grand Falls-Windsor
