Building Infrastructure to Connect Communities

Provincial Government Announces New Paving on Route 361 in Milltown-Head of Bay d'Espoir and St. Albans

A contract valued at close to $950,000 has been awarded to J-1 Contracting Limited for roadwork on Route 361 in the District of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. The contract, which was awarded last month, is made possible through funding under the 2015-16 Provincial Roads Program and work will begin immediately. Work will be completed this year.

"Reliable roads and transportation infrastructure is important to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Through this recently awarded contract on the south coast of the province, two sections of Route 361 will receive upgrades. Funding for this work is provided through Budget 2015 which allocates $317.9 million in priority infrastructure projects, including $204 million for provincial roads, bridges, and other road work."
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The contract includes pulverizing and paving a 1.65 kilometre section of Route 361 in the Town of Milltown-Head of Bay d'Espoir and a 0.94 kilometre section at Goats Cove in St. Albans.

"I am excited for this investment by the Provincial Government in road upgrades that will continue to improve the transportation network in Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. These types of projects significantly improve the quality of life for residents and commercial operations in the region. I look forward to its completion."
- Tracy Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune

This work further expands on the strategic road improvements already made in the south coast region, including a recently completed $10 million multi-year project to upgrade and pave over 33 kilometres of the Bay d'Espoir Highway (R360).

Over the past three years, more than $400 million has helped maintain, upgrade and enhance hundreds of kilometres of roads, as well as replace 23 bridges and repair 40 other bridges throughout the province. High quality transportation infrastructure is integral to the social and economic growth of Newfoundland and Labrador, which are key elements of the recently launched Population Growth Strategy.
