Provincial Government Awards $21 Million Tender for New Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s School

A significant milestone in preparations for a new school in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s has been reached with the awarding of a construction tender valued at $21.3 million to Marco Services Ltd.

“The allocation of over $21 million to build a new Grade 5-9 school in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s is one of many strategic investments being made in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. In fact, over $660 million is being invested this year in areas that are important to the people of the province such as roads, health care facilities, municipal infrastructure and of course key projects to meet infrastructure needs in the education system.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The new school, a two-story building with 31 classrooms, will be located near the town hall of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s on Thorburn Road. The school will also include a gymnasium, commercial kitchen, library/resources centre, home economics room, science labs, a technology and fabrication lab suite, two music rooms, an art room and a computer room. The school is designed to hold an anticipated 500 students upon opening and can accommodate an expansion to 700 students if necessary.

“Over the past decade, our government has placed an emphasis on upgrading and improving schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Budget 2015 includes $95 million to continue enhancing school facilities and support a new multi-year education infrastructure plan which prepares for projected growth.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Acting Minister of Education

Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested more than $731 million in K-12 infrastructure to ensure students and teachers continue to enjoy safe and healthy learning environments. Fourteen new schools have been opened; 11 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 27 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, with 13 more underway; and approximately 1,930 repairs and maintenance projects have been approved.

This most recent investment speaks directly to Live Here, Work Here, Belong Here, A Population Growth Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador, 2015-2025, which is the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 10-year plan to support individuals and families. The strategy will ensure investments and programs are aligned to encourage individuals to choose Newfoundland and Labrador to live, work and raise a family.
