Roads Improvements to Support Residents and Economy

Provincial Government Awards Contract for Road Upgrades on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula

The Provincial Government has awarded a contract for road upgrades in a number of communities on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula. The contract, valued at approximately $1.9 million, was awarded to Weir’s Construction Limited, and includes work on the Pouch Cove Line, Pine Line, St. Thomas Line, Torbay Road, Indian Meal Line, Beachy Cove Road, and various roads on Bell Island.

“Our government continues to invest in road infrastructure improvements throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Budget 2015 allocated $204 million in funding for provincial road upgrades, bridges, and other road work. The awarding of this contract today for road upgrades on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula is another example of our commitment to building and maintaining strong and reliable infrastructure for the benefit of residents and the economy throughout the province.”

The following road upgrades are included in this contract:

  • Upgrading and paving 2.7 km of Route 20-19, Pouch Cove Line;
  • Upgrading and resurfacing 0.6 km of Route 20-21, Pine Line;
  • Levelling asphalt for 0.5 km of Route 50, St. Thomas Line;
  • Improving drainage on Route 20, Torbay Road and Route 20-16, Indian Meal Line;
  • Widening and upgrading on Route 41, Beachy Cove Road; and
  • Upgrading and repaving of various local roads on Bell Island.

The Provincial Government remains committed to providing a safe and reliable transportation network throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the past three years, more than $400 million has helped maintain, upgrade and enhance hundreds of kilometres of roads, as well as replace 23 bridges and repair 40 other bridges.
