Providing Infrastructure That Supports Communities

Work Commencing on Portugal Cove-St. Philip's Wharf

The Provincial Government will invest over $3.8 million for improvements to the wharf at Portugal Cove-St. Philip's. A contract to carry out the work this summer has been awarded to Trident Construction Limited. The project is one of several key investments being made to wharf infrastructure across Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The enhancements to the wharf at Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, valued at approximately $3.8 million, are an important phase in ongoing preparations for the arrival of our new ferry, the MV Legionnaire. When complete, the upgrades will result in additional parking on the breakwater and we will work with the contractor during the construction period to reduce the impact for travelers as much as possible. We appreciate everyone's patience while this important work is underway."
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The enhancements to the wharf are required to prepare it for the larger dimensions of the MV Legionnaire, a new 80-metre ice class vessel which is scheduled to arrive in the province in February 2016. The contract is for modifications to the wharf, as well as the construction of a fixed ramp to move vehicles on and off the new ferry.

The Provincial Government is investing $13.1 million through Budget 2015 for renovations to wharf infrastructure to accommodate two new ferries for Bell Island and Fogo Island-Change Islands. In addition, $299,000 is being invested for enhancements to the wharf at Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
