Work Progresses on Significant Sir Robert Bond Bridge Project

The Provincial Government has awarded the tender to begin construction of the new Sir Robert Bond Bridge. The contract, valued at more than $13.8 million, was awarded to Johnson’s Construction Ltd.

“The Sir Robert Bond Bridge represents a vital part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s transportation network, as it is the only east-west highway link that crosses the Exploits River. Budget 2015 allocates $5.3 million for the construction of the new Sir Robert Bond Bridge, with subsequent allocations over the next two years, and we anticipate the total cost of the project will be approximately $22.4 million.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The Provincial Government has invested $2.6 million to date to complete a significant amount of work in preparation for the actual bridge construction phase of this project, including relocation of utilities and realignment of the approaches that lead to both sides of the bridge. The new bridge which is a cost-shared project with the Federal Government, will be a three-span, 210 metre, double steel box girder bridge with reinforced concrete deck.

“The Sir Robert Bond Bridge is a critical link across the island and is used by all commercial and passenger traffic. This is good news for the people of the area and the travelling public in the province. The replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge is a major project, and another example of how our government is making responsible decisions to invest in our towns and communities to ensure lasting benefits for people and business throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits

While the new bridge is under construction, the existing bridge will be maintained and receive any required repair work to ensure it remains safe. Upon completion of the new bridge, the existing structure will be completely removed.

Over the past three years, more than $400 million has helped maintain, upgrade and enhance hundreds of kilometres of roads, as well as replace 23 bridges and repair 40 other bridges throughout the province.
