Roads Improvements to Support Residents and Economy

Upgrades Coming for Several Roads on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula

The Provincial Government has called the tender for upgrades to sections of the following roads in a number of communities on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula: Pouch Cove Line, Pine Line, St. Thomas Line, Torbay Road, Indian Meal Line, Beachy Cove Road, and various roads on Bell Island.

"The quality of road infrastructure in our province is important to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. As a result, Budget 2015 allocates $317.9 million in priority infrastructure projects including $204 million in provincial roads, bridges, and other road work. Through this tender, upgrades will be made to several adjoining roads that connect communities in this area, as well as various roads on Bell Island. Local businesses, those using services in nearby communities and tourists admiring the beauty of our coastline will all benefit from improvements to these roads."
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The tender call includes the following:

  • Upgrade and pave 2.7 km of Route 20-19, Pouch Cove Line;
  • Upgrade and resurface 0.6 km of Route 20-21, Pine Line;
  • Levelling asphalt for 0.5 km of Route 50, St. Thomas Line;
  • Drainage improvements on Route 20, Torbay Road and Route 20-16, Indian Meal Line;
  • Road widening and upgrades on Route 41, Beachy Cove Road; and
  • Upgrading and repaving of various local roads on Bell Island.

"These investments in our roads will benefit the people for many years to come. Our government has made it a priority to upgrade these key roads which many residents of the Northeast Avalon use regularly and depend on in the region."
- Kevin Parsons, MHA for Cape St. Francis

The Provincial Government remains committed to providing a safe and reliable transportation network throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the past three years, more than $400 million has helped maintain, upgrade and enhance hundreds of kilometres of roads, as well as replace 23 bridges and repair 40 other bridges.
