Supporting Community Recreation, Health and Wellness
Communities Benefit from Over $677,000 in Healthy Living Grants
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors Wellness and Social Development, was in the Town of Torbay today to announce that a total of $677,685 has been provided to 85 community-based organizations under the 2015 Community Healthy Living Fund.
"The Community Health Living Fund supports a wide range of initiatives and activities designed to increase wellness and healthy living opportunities for people of all ages throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. As a government, we want to create the environments and opportunities for people to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle that includes physical activity, healthy eating, and taking measures to prevent chronic illness."
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development
The $2.2 million Community Healthy Living Fund supports communities, community groups, recreation committees and organizations in their efforts to increase wellness. Grants are awarded four times a year.
One of this year's recipients is the Town of Torbay, which received $5,000 for its Torbay Community Garden Expansion Project. The funding will help provide a permanent home for the town's community garden, at Upper Three Corner Pond Park, enabling it to grow to more than twice its current size.
"The new location of the community garden will put it at the town's recreation hub, allowing more people to participate and enjoy the benefits of growing their own food. It's all about people eating healthy with the added bonus of knowing they grew their food with their own hands."
- Kevin Parsons, MHA for Cape St. Francis
A complete list of 2015 Community Healthy Living Fund recipients, to date, can be viewed in the backgrounder below.
"Our residents are extremely interested in growing their own food and living a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Right now, we have more demand than we can meet for garden plots, so we are pleased to receive this support to help relocate the community garden to a permanent home with lots of room to grow. "
-Ralph Tapper, Mayor, Town of Torbay
The Community Healthy Living Fund provides funding under three categories: Capacity Building, Programs, and Supportive Environments. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. For more information, including program guidelines and applications, see: www.swsd.gov.nl.ca/grants/chl_fund.html.
