Province Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week
Canada is celebrating World Breastfeeding Week (October 1-7) and the Provincial Government is joining the Baby-Friendly Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (Baby-Friendly NL) and its partners to promote the benefits of breastfeeding to both mothers and babies.
Breastfeeding provides the nutrients babies need in early development and helps nurture close bonds between mother and child. It is important that we all support mothers and families in their efforts to breastfeed and to promote child health, growth and development.
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development
Baby-Friendly NL and its partners La Leche League Canada and Breastfeeding Support NL celebrated World Breastfeeding Week by holding an event today (Friday, October 2) at the Confederation Building with the theme Breastfeeding Lets Make it Work. About 100 mothers, babies and their families and supporters attended.
Our provincial theme this year has a particular focus on supporting families in the early weeks and months of breastfeeding. Family members, friends, health care providers, employers and the entire community are needed to support breastfeeding families throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. We need to celebrate the fact that more women have initiated breastfeeding, and we need to strive to better support families so that they can breastfeed longer."
- Janine Woodrow, Registered Dietitian, Member of Baby Friendly Council of NL
