Upgrades Improve Social Housing for Three South Coast Communities

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded Norvaco Construction three contracts valued at $161,000 to renovate and upgrade four social housing homes in three communities on the province’s south coast.

“Improving the quality of social rental housing accommodations has been a priority of our government for many years, and investments such as this emphasize our commitment to building stronger homes and communities for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

The four dwellings are located in Belleoram, Milltown and St. Jacques. The work will include roofing, siding, windows and exterior door replacements along with ventilation and electrical system upgrades. The properties will also receive various site improvements.

“With over 5,500 units in our portfolio, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the largest landlord in the province, and we understand the importance of modernizing and improving social housing to ensure it continues to be available for the future.”
- John Ottenheimer, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

The anticipated completion date for these projects is fall 2015.

“The work will ensure that these four social housing homes continue to provide safe and affordable housing options for low-income families living on the south coast.”
- Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune

Budget 2015 provides $10 million to NLHC to upgrade 450 social housing units throughout the province. Since 2007, close to 77 per cent of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation units province-wide have received upgrades.
