Investing in Affordable Housing

Renovations Continue on Social Housing in Coastal Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has awarded four contracts, valued at a total of $299,000, to upgrade 41 social housing homes in Hopedale, Makkovik and Nain on the northern coast of Labrador.

“Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is taking a carefully-planned approach to upgrading and modernizing its social housing properties in order to provide safe and affordable housing to people in greatest need. In fact, since 2007, 77 per cent of the corporation’s rental units have received improvements that will extend the life of the properties. I am very pleased to see these latest projects moving forward, as they will provide greater comfort to tenants living in these remote coastal Labrador communities.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

Budgell’s Equipment and Rentals has been awarded a $116,500 contract to replace fuel tank systems and/or install new furnaces at 14 homes in Hopedale, as well as a $49,000 contract to replace fuel tanks and install furnaces at four homes in Makkovik. All these projects are expected to be completed by August.

Eastern Sheet Metal Works Ltd. has been awarded an $85,000 contract to replace 19 furnaces at social housing units in Nain. The work is expected to be completed this month.

NGN Nunatsiavut Construction Inc. has been awarded a $48,000 contract to install new roofing on four units in Nain. The work will include replacing existing asphalt shingles, damaged roof sheathing, and eaves. The project is expected to be completed in September.

“This investment will upgrade and maintain existing affordable housing units on the northern coast of Labrador so that they will be available for low income individuals and families well into the future. Ensuring residents in Labrador have access to affordable housing is a priority for me, and I am pleased these projects will be completed so quickly.”
- The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs
