Streamlining Application Process Benefits Communities

Community Healthy Living Fund Realigns Grant Programs

The Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development is realigning its healthy living, recreation and wellness grant programs to be administered under a streamlined program called the Community Healthy Living Fund (CHLF).

This new approach brings together funding from a number of grant programs available to communities and organizations through a single application process. The creation of the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development last year provided an opportunity to offer funding applicants a more streamlined approach to funding requests for wellness, recreation and healthy living initiatives. The Community Healthy Living Fund is a one-stop shopping approach to grant applicants and will minimize the need for the completion of multiple applications. It essentially makes it easier for organization staff and volunteers to apply for funding to support worthwhile projects and programming.
- Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The $2.2 million Community Healthy Living Fund will serve as the single entry point for applications. It replaces the following programs:

  • Seniors Recreation Grant Program;
  • Provincial Health and Wellness Grant Program;
  • Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Organization Grant Program; and
  • Community Recreation Support Program (including the Community Capital Grant Program, the Physical Activity Equipment Grant Program and the Community Recreation Development Grant Program).

There is no reduction in funding available for community programming as a result of this realignment. All organizations eligible for previous programs are eligible to apply under the streamlined program.

The Community Healthy Living Fund will provide funding under three categories: Capacity Building, Programs, and Supportive Environments.

Our government has put the infrastructure and opportunities in place, for people to engage in healthy, recreational pursuits. But we also know that at the end of the day, people must make their own choices about how they use these opportunities to improve their own lifestyle, and that of their families. This fund will support a wide range of initiatives and activities, including the development of recreation and healthy living plans, improving the usability, accessibility and safety of facilities used for sport and recreation programs, and programs to increase wellness and healthy living opportunities for all ages.
- Minister Jackman
