ATIPPA, 2015: New Information, Guidelines and Forms for Citizens and Public Bodies

The provinces new access and privacy legislation, the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 (ATIPPA, 2015) came into force this week. As the Office tasked with oversight of this new Act, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) is committed to working with citizens and public bodies to ensure that the law delivers on its promise of better access to information and protection of privacy.

As part of our educational mandate the OIPC has updated our website and created a number of new Guidelines and Forms to help facilitate understanding and use of the ATIPPA, 2015, including:

  • Updated pages devoted to explaining the ATIPPA, 2015, as well as the Complaints process for both Access to Information and Protection of Privacy: //oipc.nl.ca/atippa.htm
  • A new page devoted to ATIPPA, 2015 Guidance Documents to assist public bodies in understanding and applying some of the major changes created by the new law, including Approval to Disregard Access Requests, Cost Estimates, Indirect Collection of Personal Information, Privacy Impact Assessments, Public Interest Override, and Requesting a Time Extension: //oipc.nl.ca/atippaguidancedocuments.htm
  • A Special Edition of our newsletter aimed at public bodies that focuses on the ATIPPA Review and new ATIPPA, 2015 legislative changes: //oipc.nl.ca/pdfs/SpecialEditionNewsletterMay2015.pdf
  • New forms for applicants for filing Access Complaints or Applications Relating to Costs and Privacy Complaints to the OIPC: //oipc.nl.ca/forms_atippa.htm

Commissioner Ed Ring commented: The OIPC is pleased with its expanded role and the advancements in access and privacy law the ATIPPA, 2015 has created. This new law is the best of its kind in Canada and among the best globally.
