Investing in Recreation for Communities and Families

Partners Unveil Design for New Campia Gymnastics Facility

The design for a new Campia Gymnastics regional facility was unveiled today in Mount Pearl. The facility is being cost-shared between the Provincial Government and the City of Mount Pearl through an investment of over $1.9 million. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, was joined by the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Mount Pearl North, and Randy Simms, Mayor of Mount Pearl, for the announcement.

"As a government we are committed to supporting recreational facilities throughout our province which create opportunities for our residents to live healthy, active lifestyles. The new Campia Gymnastics facility demonstrates our strategic investments in communities which facilitates recreation programming for families in the region."
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The approximate $1.9 million cost-shared investment was provided through the 2014-2017 multi-year capital works funding allocation to the City of Mount Pearl. The Provincial Government will contribute 70 per cent of the funding with the remaining 30 per cent covered by the City of Mount Pearl.

"Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador: A Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, our government has committed more than $225 million to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province. Investments such as this one in the Campia Gymnastics facility do not just create outstanding athletic and recreation centres - they build active, healthy communities for future generations."
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The facility will boast 10,000 square feet of floor space, tumbling and trampoline pits, viewing areas and office space.

"This new facility will be of great benefit to the region and support the training of hundreds of athletes while also providing Mount Pearl the opportunity to play host to regional and provincial events. Having such facilities creates an environment to attract families and aligns with our Population Growth Strategy."
-The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Mount Pearl North

Construction on the new facility is expected to be completed by 2016.

"I am pleased to see progress being made on this new recreational facility here in the City of Mount Pearl. This facility is being brought to fruition through a partnership between the Provincial Government, the City of Mount Pearl and Campia Gymnastics. This recreation facility will benefit residents in the city for years to come."
- Randy Simms, Mayor of Mount Pearl
