Investing in Community Infrastructure

Event Marks Completion of Marystown Recreation Complex

A new multi-purpose recreation facility will soon be open to the public in Marystown creating new recreational and wellness opportunities for residents throughout the Burin Peninsula. This infrastructure development is supported by a $10 million investment from the Provincial Government.

“Supporting the development of recreational infrastructure contributes to healthier, more active communities and creates the conditions to attract families to live in the region which are goals of the Population Growth Strategy. Our $10 million investment in this facility will not only benefit the residents of Marystown, but communities throughout the Burin Peninsula.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, was joined by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Bank, and Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue, today for a ribbon-cutting and tour of the facility. The complex is expected to be open to the public in the coming weeks.

“This is a beautiful recreation facility that will serve this region well into the future. It has a six-lane pool, a gymnasium, indoor walking track, fitness room, steam and sauna room, as well as multi-purpose rooms, and meeting rooms. It will also be fully landscaped. I am proud of the government and community partnership that resulted in the construction of this complex, and look forward to seeing it fully operational in the near future.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The facility is an innovative, environmentally-friendly project, designed to LEED silver certification in accordance with the provincial Build Better Buildings Policy. The building relies on ground source heat exchange pumps for some of its heat and cooling, as well as heat recovery from the pool and energy-efficient lighting. It also has electric car charging stations.

The Town of Marystown has also invested over $2.4 million into the multi-purpose recreation complex, which is expected to enhance its ability to retain and attract both businesses and individuals to the municipality and surrounding region.

“We are very pleased to see this facility come to fruition. As mayor, and on behalf of council, I thank the Provincial Government for its investment. This new multi-purpose recreation facility will serve people from all over the Burin Peninsula for many years to come.”
- Sam Synard, Mayor, Town of Marystown

Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador: A Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador, over $225 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming and athlete development throughout the province.
