Central Regional Service Board Celebrates Official Opening of New Materials Recovery Facility
The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Allan Scott, Chairperson of the Central Regional Service Board, announced the official opening of the new materials recovery facility in Norris Arm today.
"The Provincial Government's investment of $17 million into the Central Regional Service Board's material recovery facility will further enhance waste management operations and services throughout the central region. This new facility demonstrates our commitment to solid waste management in the province. I am pleased to see the completion of this facility and the environmental and economic impact it will bring to residents and communities in the region."
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs
The facility contains state of the art equipment that will sort paper, aluminum, metal containers and several grades of plastic containers with the goal of keeping waste out of the landfill and working towards the waste diversion targets of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy. The facility is expected to process approximately 12,000 to 15,000 tonnes of recyclables annually.
"The opening of the materials recovery facility in Norris Arm allows both residents and commercial entities to increase the amount of recyclables and hazardous waste they divert from landfill, which will not only help advance our 50 per cent waste diversion goal, but also extend the life of the region's lined landfill."
-The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Minister Responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board
The facility will employ approximately 24 full-time employees when operating at full capacity and is operated by Heberts Recycling Inc under contract with the Central Regional Service Board.
The total cost of the materials recovery facility was approximately $22 million, with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador investing $17 million and the balance of funding coming from the Central Regional Service Board.
"The construction and start-up of the materials recovery facility is another milestone in Central Regional Service Board's operations. This facility will remove recyclable products from the waste stream and assist us in central in achieving the 50 per cent diversion rate that is expected of us in the disposal of waste in a more environmentally responsible manner."
- Allan Scott, Chairperson, Central Regional Service Board
The Provincial Government is continuing to invest in the Provincial Waste Management Strategy with a plan to complete a province-wide network of transfer stations and waste recovery facilities by 2020 and develop full-scale organic waste management infrastructure by 2025.
