Responsible Investments to Strengthen Communities
Provincial Government Announces Over $4 Million in Capital Works Projects Throughout Western Region
The Provincial Government is committed to supporting municipal infrastructure upgrades across the province and is helping invest over $4 million in capital works funding in the Western region, cost-shared with local communities. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, made the announcement today, joined by the Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Humber West.
“Improving municipal infrastructure is vital for the sustainability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. This total investment of over $4 million will assist the residents of the Western region with improvements to roads, water and sewer services as well as enhancements to recreation infrastructure. Government remains focused on these types of initiatives and has allocated over $800 million to more than 1,200 municipal infrastructure projects between 2008 and 2015.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs
The Municipal Capital Works program fosters the development of cost-shared projects in a wide range of municipal infrastructure areas. Typical projects include water and wastewater treatment, roads, recreational facilities and various community initiatives. In the western region, approximately 67 per cent of the approved projects are water related.
“Today’s announcement represents a significant investment in priority infrastructure which will improve services for residents and businesses and make these communities better places for families to live and work. These investments demonstrate the Provincial Government’s commitment to strengthening communities and advancing the Population Growth Strategy.”
- Minister Hutchings
The 2015 Municipal Capital Works program investment builds on the new community sustainability partnership announced through Budget 2015, which provided an additional $46 million over the next three years to communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. These additional revenues to municipalities can be utilized to assist with financing municipal capital works projects.
“On behalf of Massey Drive council and residents, I thank the Provincial Government for investing in infrastructure in our town. It is important that we continue to upgrade and modernize infrastructure to provide quality services to residents.”
- Gordon Davis, Mayor of Massey Drive
Since 2008, the Provincial Government has approved in excess of $800 million in municipal capital works projects resulting in improved municipal infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
