Building Safer Communities with Enhanced Firefighting Services

Minister Announces Firefighting Vehicle Funding for Gaultois

The Provincial Government today announced that the Town of Gaultois will receive funding toward the purchase of a new $130,000 rural response unit. The announcement was made in Gaultois by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, where he was joined by Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune.

“Strategic partnerships with communities such as the Town of Gaultois are a critical part of our Provincial Government’s efforts to ensure safe communities for all families. This new rural response unit will help the Gaultois Volunteer Fire Department safely and effectively respond to fires and emergencies, protecting families and homes in the community. The Provincial Government is grateful to firefighters, who are always on call and ready to respond to emergencies across the province.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador

Funding for the vehicle is being provided on a 90/10 cost sharing basis with the Provincial Government providing the larger portion and the Town of Gaultois providing the remainder. The two-door rural response unit will feature a 300-gallon water tank, as well as foam capacity.

“This announcement demonstrates the Provincial Government's commitment to providing modern equipment to firefighters in all regions of the province, including more isolated and rural areas. I am proud that this government continues to recognize and address the unique needs of the communities of Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune.”
- Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune

This investment is part of more than $5 million included in Budget 2015 for fire protection vehicles and equipment, matching the largest-ever amount allocated to fire and emergency services in the previous year’s budget.

“It's critical for the future of our community that we have the firefighting capacity we may need right here on site as Gaultois is accessible by ferry only. I am very pleased with this announcement and thank the Provincial Government for recognizing the importance of having the right equipment here in our town.”
- Gordon Hunt, Mayor of Gaultois
