Safer Communities through Enhanced Fire Equipment

Minister Announces Funding for a New Tanker Truck for Cartwright

The Town of Cartwright will receive funding from the Provincial Government towards the purchase of a new tanker truck for the Volunteer Fire Department. Funding for the $250,000 vehicle is being provided on a 90/10 cost sharing basis with the province providing the larger share.

"A new tanker truck will be of great benefit to the Cartwright Volunteer Fire Department in responding to fires in the region. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador respects our firefighters and we continue to ensure that they have the tools required to protect residents in all areas, including rural parts of the province."
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador

This investment is part of more than $5 million included in Budget 2015 for fire protection vehicles and equipment. From Budget 2004 to the end of 2014-15, the Provincial Government has contributed more than $21 million toward the purchase of new fire protection vehicles.

"Cartwright has seen its share of devastation by fire in recent months, and we have been struggling to better equip our dedicated volunteer fire department. I welcome this announcement and thank the Provincial Government for making our community a safer place to live. I would also like to thank all those involved in the application and approval process."
- Dwight Lethbridge, Mayor of Cartwright

The new tanker truck will replace one that was destroyed by fire earlier this summer.
