Strengthening Health Care Programs and Services

Paid Family Caregiving Home Support Now Accessible to More Individuals and Families

The Provincial Government is broadening the eligibility requirements for the Paid Family Caregiving Home Support Option to include clients who currently receive subsidized home support services.

Our government continues to promote greater access to programs that provide the people of the province with healthcare options while also ensuring sustainability in our health care system. The broadened eligibility requirements will allow more individuals to choose who will provide their subsidized care; giving individuals more control over how their health care needs are met.
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services

The Paid Family Caregiving Home Support Option allows individuals to hire a family member to provide their care when eligibility requirements are met. Current home support recipients who are interested in transferring to this option may begin to identify themselves to their regional health authority on October 22 and assessments will begin the week of October 26. For more information about the Paid Family Caregiving Option, the eligibility criteria and the telephone numbers for the four regional health authorities, please visit: www.health.gov.nl.ca/health/long_term_care/family_caregiving.html.

In keeping with the Provincial Governments Close to Home strategy for long-term care and community support services, the Paid Family Caregiving Home Support Option empowers individuals to remain in the comfort of their own homes and communities, while receiving supports and services necessary for their health and wellbeing.
- Minister Kent

Launched in 2012, the Provincial Governments Close to Home: A Strategy for Long-Term Care and Community Support Services was created to strengthen long-term care and community support services throughout the province. In line with this strategy, Budget 2015 includes an investment of approximately $700 million for long-term care and community support services, including home support and personal care homes.
