Personal Care Homes Receive Increased Support for Benefit of Residents

To maintain high standards of care and help ensure comfortable living environments for personal care home residents, the Provincial Government has increased the base monthly subsidy rate per subsidized resident for operators across Newfoundland and Labrador through an investment of up to $16.3 million over three years.

"This latest support for personal care home operators comes as a result of our ongoing commitment to working with the sector for the benefit of residents. We continue to work with operators and since 2006 we have invested over $27 million to benefit personal care homes. Our government values the crucial services that personal care homes provide, particularly as we face a growing population of older residents."
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services

Retroactive to September 1, 2015, personal care home operators will benefit from an increased monthly subsidy rate per subsidized resident as follows:

  • $2,220 in 2015-16 ($270 increase to previous rate of $1,950)
  • $2,295 in 2016-17 ($75 increase)
  • $2,375 in 2017-18 ($80 increase)

These rate increases for the personal care home sector also apply to the Community Care Home Program.

"We recognize that both the personal care home and home support sectors share the same labour pool. With recent increases in support for the home support sector, these increases will provide balance by allowing personal care home operators to offer more competitive compensation packages for employees in their sector."
- Minister Kent

Recognizing the importance of ensuring there is sufficient capacity to meet a growing need for long-term care, Budget 2015 provides approximately $700 million in long-term care and community support services, including home support and personal care homes.
