Supporting the Health of Families and Communities
Provincial Government Awards Addictions Prevention and Mental Health Promotion Grants
The Provincial Government has awarded $140,000 to support successful
applicants under this year's Community Addictions Prevention and Mental
Health Promotion Grants Program. A total of 31 recipients across the
province - including individuals, community groups and non-profit
organizations - will benefit from funding to support their own initiatives
for the prevention of addictions and promotion of mental health.
"We
cannot over-emphasize the tremendous contributions of the individuals and
organizations in our communities who dedicate their time, effort and
resources to the prevention of addictions and the promotion of good mental
health. We support their efforts wherever possible, as they are crucial to
our own work as a government to increase awareness, offer support and
improve access to available services for mental health and addictions
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."
- The Honourable Steve Kent,
Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services
A
total of $140,000 in support is available every year. Applicants are
encouraged to apply for project funding on an annual basis. A list of
recipients for 2015 is included in the attached backgrounder.
"At
the Eating Disorder Foundation, we continue to see residents of this
province every day who are in need of treatment and support for a number of
complex eating disorders. We will continue to work with the Provincial
Government on the delivery of programs and services to support these
individuals. As a foundation, we strive to promote a healthy body image and
self-esteem through public education and awareness."
- Vince Withers,
Chair, Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador
The grant program, which is funded by the Provincial Government, is administered in partnership with the four regional health authorities. Each regional health authority has dedicated addiction prevention and mental health promotion staff available to provide advice, support and resources to applicants. Successful applicants’ initiatives align with one or more of six priority areas:
- Increasing awareness and understanding of problematic substance use;
- Reducing alcohol-related harms;
- Developing supportive communities;
- Mental health promotion;
- Recreational activities; and
- Child/parent/family development.
"At the CHANNAL, we strive to provide a safe space for individuals living
with mental health issues to receive peer support through a respectful,
non-judgmental, recovery-focused approach. This funding from the Provincial
Government increases our capacity to support individuals as well as provide
quality educational opportunities to our communities as a whole. We look
forward to our continued working relationship on behalf of those living with
mental illness."
- Paula Corcoran-Jacobs, Provincial Executive Director,
Consumers' Health Awareness Network Newfoundland and Labrador (CHANNAL)
