Supporting Strong and Healthy Communities

Provincial Government Proclaims Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September is being recognized as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Newfoundland and Labrador in a continued effort to encourage prevention and early detection.

“Prevention and early detection are crucial in the fight against cancer. Choosing an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits are just some of the steps each of us can take in our everyday routine to improve our health. I encourage all men in the province to pay attention to their health and talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer for men and the Canadian Cancer Society expects 540 new cases of prostate cancer to be diagnosed in Newfoundland and Labrador this year. If detected early, the survival rate can be over 90 per cent.

“September is one month out of the year when we ask Canadians to pay attention to their prostate health, but it’s something that we want men to do year-round. That’s because prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect men and when detected early, it is almost always treatable and survivable. Early detection is key.”
- Peter Mallette, Executive Director, Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic

Since 2004, more than $184 million has been invested by the Provincial Government in cancer care for equipment, programs, and services focused on prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. Approximately $8,700 in funding was provided this year to the Prostate Cancer Support Groups of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“With early detection and screening, the survival rate for prostate cancer is over 90 per cent. This is why the Canadian Cancer Society urges all men to visit their doctor and get regular check-ups. The earlier prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome.”
- Matthew Piercey, President and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Cancer Society, Newfoundland and Labrador Division

The Provincial Government is committed to the growth of healthy communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, and continues its support for individuals and families affected by cancer throughout the province.
