Investing in Health Care Infrastructure for Families and Communities
New Community Clinic Officially Opened on the Burin Peninsula
The new community clinic located near Boat Harbour on the Burin Peninsula has officially been opened. Through an investment of approximately $2.5 million, the Placentia West Medical Clinic is providing medical and community health services to communities from Monkstown to Parker’s Cove serving a population of approximately 3,000 residents.
“Having access to timely and regular primary health care services is an essential component of the ongoing continuum of care provided by our regional health authorities. The Placentia West Medical Clinic will benefit the residents of this region for many years to come. Our government remains committed to enhancing health care infrastructure and ensuring that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador receive the greatest benefits from these investments.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services
The new 4,000 square foot building provides primary care services and programs including:
- Community health nursing – public health, home and community care;
- Family medicine outpatient clinics;
- Blood collection; and
- Access to mental health professionals.
“This clinic has been a long time coming and it is the result of the hard work carried out by the Placentia West Development Committee, Eastern Health and the Provincial Government. The services provided at this facility will see improved health care for the people of the northern part of Burin - Placentia West.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development and MHA for Burin - Placentia West
The new facility replaces medical clinics in Parker’s Cove, Petite Forte and the St. Bernard’s Community Health Office.
“The investment in the new Placentia West Medical Clinic demonstrates the Provincial Government’s commitment to the health and well-being of families and communities in the area. The clinic is a wonderful addition to the region and will result in greater accessibility to high-quality medical treatment and improved patient care to residents of both Placentia Bay and Fortune Bay.”
- Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue
Community-based services are offered at the clinic five days a week with physician hours scheduled three days per week. Family practice physicians from the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre will staff the clinic on a rotating basis. Eastern Health continues to recruit for a full-time nurse practitioner who will be integrated into the schedule once available.
“The new clinic reflects our strategic priorities of increasing access to services in rural areas and improving population health. With the opening of the Placentia West Medical Clinic, our service levels to residents of the area will increase and stabilize, enhancing the quality of care to the residents we serve on the Burin Peninsula.”
- David Diamond, President and CEO of Eastern Health
Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested nearly $1.5 billion in health care infrastructure across Newfoundland and Labrador.
