Residents of Northwest Avalon Peninsula to Benefit from Approximately $2.8 Million in Health Care Funding
Four health care facilities serving families on the Northwest Avalon Peninsula will receive new equipment through an investment of approximately $2.8 million. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, made the announcement today in Carbonear. Minister Kent was joined by Glenn Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave, and George Butt, Vice-President of Eastern Health.
“Investing in health care in all regions of our province benefits our families, strengthens our communities and ensures security for the future. The approximately $2.8 million allocated to upgrade and replace equipment at these facilities will enhance care for patients and ensure that accessible and quality health care services are available to everyone in the Northwest Avalon region.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services
Investments include approximately $2.5 million for the Carbonear General Hospital to support upgrades to the electrical distribution system, renovations to the pharmacy, and for the purchase of equipment including new patient beds, as well as laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
Residents of the Harbour Lodge Nursing Home will benefit from $175,000 in funding to support the purchase of a replacement wheelchair accessible bus and five replacement beds.
Funding announced today also includes $97,000 for the purchase of 13 replacement beds to improve safety and comfort for residents of the Pentecostal Senior Citizen’s Home and $30,000 for the purchase of four replacement patient beds at the Carbonear Interfaith Citizen’s Home.
“These latest investments for the Northwest Avalon demonstrate this government’s commitment to the health and well-being of residents. The continued enhancement of services and access to long-term care beds is very important for the safety and well-being of patients in the area. As MHA for the District of Port de Grave, I am pleased to see these important resources provided for the people of the region.”
- Glenn Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave
The funding for the health care facilities on the Northwest Avalon Peninsula further complements the ongoing development of a new adult addictions treatment centre in Harbour Grace, which is set to open in the spring of 2015 and the new long-term care facility in Carbonear, which is anticipated to be completed by spring 2016.
“Quality and safety is a strategic priority of Eastern Health, and one we clearly share with government. I commend the Provincial Government for its substantial investment, and ongoing commitment to improving health care services in this region, which will strengthen both the accessibility and quality of the care we provide to our patients in Carbonear and the surrounding area.”
- David Diamond, President and CEO, Eastern Health
Since 2004, the Provincial Government has invested nearly $1.5 billion in health care infrastructure.
