More than 700 Students Participate in National Forest Week Poster Contest

Dwayne Goodyear, a Grade 6 student at Phoenix Academy in Carmanville, is the provincial winner of the 2015 National Forest Week Poster Contest and was honoured today for his artistic talent and knowledge of fire prevention techniques. As the overall provincial winner, his poster is featured on the cover of the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency 2016 Calendar.

"More than 700 students from 45 schools participated in the contest this year, each with their own unique ideas about fire prevention. We thank the teachers who encouraged the young people to get involved and the students for their efforts. The forest industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is valuable for social, economic and cultural reasons. It is good to know our young people have such tremendous respect for the resource."

Clayton Forsey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, presented Dwayne with a framed version of his poster, an Apple iPad Mini 2 and case and a fire prevention gift pack. Phoenix Academy will receive a $500 grant to be used towards the purchase of books for the school library.

Grade 5 students were invited to participate in the annual contest, sponsored by the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, Forestry Services Branch. FireSmart Begins at Home was the theme of this year's contest, which has one overall provincial winner and 12 finalists. The finalists have their posters featured in the calendar and will receive a fire prevention gift pack.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the forest sector is valued at $286.5 million with over 5,000 people directly and indirectly employed in sawmilling, woods contracting, newsprint manufacturing and value-added enterprises.

Winners of Provincial National Forest Week Poster Contest

More than 700 Grade 5 students representing 45 schools participated in the annual poster contest held as part of National Forest Week. FireSmart Begins at Home was the theme of the contest with students are asked to create a poster that outlines fire safety activities that can conducted around the home, cabin or yard.

One provincial winner and 12 finalists were selected from the entries based on originality, creativity and adherence to the contest theme.

Dwayne Goodyear, a student at Phoenix Academy in Carmanville, is the provincial winner. He received an Apple iPad Mini 2 and case, a fire prevention gift pack and a framed version of his poster. Phoenix Academy will also receive a $500 grant to be used towards the purchase of books for the school library.
