Media Advisory: Minister to Attend Official Opening of Sportfest

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, will participate in the official opening of Sportfest 2015 tomorrow (Friday, June 19) at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. The event begins with a 3:30 p.m. reception, followed by a tour of Sportfest attractions and displays at 4:30 p.m.

Sportfest 2015, which runs Saturday, June 20, is hosted by Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, which this year has partnered with the Canadian Olympic Committee to bring six Canadian Olympians to the event Luke Demetre (bobsleigh), Alexandra Duckwork (snowboarding), Vicky Leblanc (softball), Eric Mitchell (ski jumping), Sandra Sassine (fencing) and Newfoundland and Labradors own Katarina Roxon (swimming).

Sportfest provides school-aged children and adults with opportunities to explore new sports either individual or organized team sports as well as new recreational activities, all while learning about the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle. The Provincial Government provides $25,000 to support Sportfest activities.
