Encouraging Students to Think About Fire Prevention

Annual Grade 5 Poster Contest Encourages Fire Safety at Home

Grade 5 students in Newfoundland and Labrador are invited to participate in the annual National Forest Week Poster Contest, sponsored by the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, Forestry Services Branch.

"Preparing for the threat of wildfire is a shared responsibility and it is never too early to start to create awareness and educate our children about the importance of fire prevention. This contest asks Grade 5 students to combine their knowledge of fire prevention techniques with their artistic talents and I am looking forward to seeing the ideas they bring forward."
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

FireSmart Begins at Home is the theme of the 2015 National Forest Week Poster Contest. Students are asked to create a poster that outlines fire safety activities that can conducted around the home, cabin or yard. The National Forest Week Committee will judge submissions based on originality, creativity and uniqueness of message. Deadline for entries is Monday, June 1, 2015.

The contest will have one overall provincial winner whose poster will be featured on the cover of the 2016 National Forest Week Calendar. The provincial winner will also receive an Apple iPad Mini 2 and case, a fire prevention gift pack and a framed version of their poster. In addition, their school will receive a $500 grant to be used towards the purchase of books for their library.

The calendar will also feature posters created by 13 finalists from across the province who will each receive a fire prevention gift pack. All prizes will be awarded during National Forest Week, September 20-26.
