Public Advisory: Communities Invited to Participate in National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day

The Forestry and Agrifoods Agency is supporting National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on May 2 and encouraging cabin and homeowners to participate in local projects to help reduce the risk of wildfire damage.

National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is a collaboration between the National Fire Protection Association, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, The Co-operators and FireSmart Canada.

Groups and individuals can apply for funding towards organizing a local event, and one participating community will be chosen as the media launch site for the initiative. The deadline to register is March 20, 2015.

Information about the first National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day in Canada, including a list of contest rules and project ideas, is available at www.firesmartcanada.ca.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, Forestry and Agrifoods Agency fire suppression staff responded to 75 forest fires on the island and 46 fires in Labrador during the 2014 forest fire season. A large percentage of these fires were caused by people and were preventable.
