Supporting Growth in the Horticulture Industry

Farm Marketing Workshop Focuses on New Ideas and Innovative Opportunities

A direct farm marketing workshop was delivered by the Provincial and Federal Governments in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Horticulture Producers Council on March 11 and 12 in St. John’s. This event provided participants with new ideas and innovative ways to grow their industry.

“The horticulture industry contributed $17.2 million in farm revenue towards the provincial economy in 2013, an increase of 2.4 per cent from the year previous. Events like this workshop provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about marketing their products. Their continued growth is a direct benefit to the province and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

The workshop provided an opportunity to discuss consumer trends, branding, value-added packaging, market development and other relevant topics. Presenters at the workshop included a mix of industry professionals, specialists and producers with extensive experience in marketing.

“Canada’s horticulture sector is a significant contributor to the Canadian economy. Our government is proud to support initiatives like these that provide valuable information to farmers on consumer trends, new markets and economic opportunities that will help strengthen the industry.”
- The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Federal Agriculture Minister

Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative, provided $5,275 through the Human Resource Development Initiative to help fund the workshop. Additional funding of $27,800 was provided by the Provincial Government’s Agriculture Business Development Division and the Provincial Training Program.

“The Newfoundland and Labrador Horticulture Producers Council is pleased to once again partner with the provincial and federal agencies to present this workshop. This is an excellent opportunity for producers to gain knowledge and participate in worthwhile sessions that will enhance the marketability of our products. As we strive to grow our industry, workshops of this nature are a valuable means of promoting that growth.”
- Melvin Rideout, President, Newfoundland and Labrador Horticulture Producers Council
