Premier Congratulates 2017 Tim Horton’s Brier Bid Team

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today offered congratulations to the 2017 Brier Bid Committee, STEP (Sport Tourism Event Partnership) St. John’s and the City of St. John’s on the successful bid to host the 2017 Canadian Men’s Curling Championship. The winning bid was announced today by Curling Canada at an event in St. John’s.

“Every evening and weekend during curling season, in community arenas throughout our province, you will find young and old getting together to curl. It is a sport in which the entire family can take part, and that is why I am so pleased that St. John’s will be hosting the 2017 Tim Horton’s Brier. The national spotlight on this event will help showcase our province to the nation and grow the popularity of the sport in our province, thereby promoting sportsmanship and healthy living. Congratulations to the Brier Bid Committee and partnering organizations on their fine work in attracting this popular event to our capital city.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Held annually since 1927, the Brier is one of Canada’s preeminent sporting championships. It will take place at the St. John’s Convention Centre and Mile One Centre from March 4-12, 2017.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador committed $300,000 to support the bid to host the 2017 Brier.

“Congratulations to the 2017 Brier Bid Committee and to the City of St. John’s on the successful bid to host this first-class sporting event. Our government is proud to support the Brier, which will provide significant economic benefits to the region. This is a fabulous economic and athletic opportunity, as we showcase to the country, Newfoundland and Labrador’s love of curling.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

This is the second time the championship will be played in St. John’s. The 1972 Macdonald Brier was held at Memorial Stadium in St. John’s and won by Manitoba’s Orest Meleschuk. The 2017 Brier will mark the 13th year of title sponsorship by Tim Horton’s.
