Premier Applauds 2015 Parapan Am Games Athletes
The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, congratulated Newfoundland and Labrador’s three Parapan Am Games athletes today for their participation and success at the games, held August 7-15 in Toronto.
Katarina Roxon of Kippens took home six medals in swimming – one gold, three silver and two bronze; Liam Hickey of St. John’s earned a silver medal as part of the Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team, and Kyle Payne of Cormack and the men’s football-7 squad finished just out of the medals with a fourth place finish.
“It is a major achievement to represent your country at a high level competition like the Parapan Am Games, but to come away with the kind of success experienced by our athletes last week is remarkable. I was among thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who were following their efforts, and applauding their triumphs, throughout the games. I offer my sincere congratulations to Katarina, Liam, and Kyle – as well as their families, coaches and supporters – for representing us so well.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
Canada won a total of 168 medals at the Parapan Am Games, including 50 gold, 63 silver and 55 bronze.
“The 2015 Parapan Am Games have clearly been the most successful ever for Newfoundland and Labrador athletes. I congratulate them, and thank them, for being an inspiration to us all. Their hard work and perseverance have certainly paid off.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development
