Honouring Our Peacekeepers

Provincial Government Naming CBS Bypass Peacekeepers Way

In recognition of Canadian National Peacekeeping Memorial Day, celebrated yesterday (Sunday, August 9), the Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, in partnership with the Newfoundland Chapter of the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association, announced today that the CBS Bypass will be named Peacekeepers Way.

“National Peacekeeping Memorial Day was established in 2008 as an opportunity to recognize the invaluable contribution of members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and provincial and municipal police forces. Our government is honoured to fulfil the request made by the local chapter of the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association and name the CBS Bypass Peacekeepers Way.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, more than 125,000 Canadian peacekeepers have participated in dozens of international efforts over the past six decades in countries all over the world.

“Naming the CBS Bypass Peacekeepers Way is in keeping with other road infrastructure in our province that has been named in honour of this province’s veterans, such as Veterans Memorial Highway on the Avalon Peninsula and the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Labrador. It is a small way to express our pride and respect for the sacrifices of these women and men who have made such significant contributions to ensure the security of our nation.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

August 9 was selected as the Canadian National Peacekeeping Memorial Day to recognize the loss of Canadian lives on a peacekeeping mission.

“On August 9, 1974, all nine Canadian peacekeepers who were on a United Nations-marked Canadian transport aircraft were killed when their plane was shot down by Syrian missiles in the Middle East. It was the largest single-day loss of Canadian Armed Forces personnel in a peace support operation. Canada has played a key role in peacekeeping efforts worldwide, and I am pleased to have a highway named in our province to honour our peacekeeping veterans.”
- Garfield Best, President, Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association, NL

A naming event is planned for October 24 to coincide with International United Nations Day.
