Responsible Investments to Strengthen Communities
Provincial Government Announces Over $9.3 Million in Capital Works Projects Throughout Central Region
The central region of the province will benefit from over $9.3 million in cost-shared investments for projects which include upgrading water and sewer systems, improving roads and enhancing town halls. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs.
“Improving water, sewer and road infrastructure is important for the sustainability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. This significant investment will ensure communities in the central region of the province have safe and reliable services for the benefit of all residents. As a government, we will continue to work with communities as they identify key projects which will enable them to grow and attract new families and businesses, a cornerstone of the Population Growth Strategy.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
The Municipal Capital Works program fosters the development of cost-shared projects in a wide range of municipal infrastructure. Typical projects include water and wastewater treatment, roads, recreational facilities and various community initiatives. In the central region, approximately 60 per cent of the approved projects are water related.
“This funding demonstrates the commitment of the Provincial Government to continue to enhance municipal infrastructure and will bring many benefits to the residents of the central region. The projects announced today have all been identified by municipalities as priority projects and our government is working collaboratively with local governments throughout the region to assist in addressing their infrastructure requirements.”
- The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs
Through Budget 2015 cost-sharing ratios are also being maintained and a provincial investment of approximately $119 million in municipal infrastructure will complete new and ongoing projects under existing municipal infrastructure programs. The Community Sustainability Partnership will also provide an additional $46 million over the next three years to municipalities which can be utilized to assist with financing municipal capital works projects.
“On behalf of the Town of Port Blandford, I thank the Provincial Government for their commitment to infrastructure, particularly the investment to support an engineering design for a new town hall and fire hall for our community. This new facility will provide much needed space for our staff and volunteer fire members as we continue to expand services to grow our community.”
- Chad Holloway, Mayor of Port Blandford
In addition, in recognition of the need for continued investment in municipal infrastructure, and building on the three-year $200 million municipal infrastructure program announced in 2014, the Provincial Government committed in Budget 2015 to a $175 million investment in new projects for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20.
