Protecting People and Property in Newfoundland and Labrador

Premier Announces More Than $365,000 for Firefighting Equipment in Central Region

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was at the town hall in Charlottetown, Bonavista Bay, today, to announce an investment of more than $365,000 investment for new firefighting equipment for Central Newfoundland. He was accompanied by the Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Terra Nova.

"This funding will provide hard-working volunteer firefighters in more than 40 communities with the life-saving equipment they need to protect people and property in Central Newfoundland. Equally as important, it will help our firefighters to complete their critical work more safely. Through this and other initiatives, our government has made enhancing fire and emergency services a priority so our volunteer firefighters can offer the best possible service to residents."
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

This funding will provide more than 75 new sets of personal protective equipment, 14 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units, eight improved communications systems, and additional approved equipment for municipalities and local service districts in the Central Region. This includes communities in the existing districts of Baie Verte-Springdale, Bonavista North, Bonavista South, Exploits, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans, Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay, Lewisporte, Terra Nova, Trinity-Bay de Verde, and Trinity North.

From Budget 2004 to the end of 2014-15, the Provincial Government contributed more than $21 million toward the purchase of 133 new fire protection vehicles. In addition, more than $6.5 million was invested in new firefighting equipment. Budget 2015 included approximately $5 million for fire protection vehicles and equipment, matching the highest-ever level of funding for fire and emergency services in Newfoundland and Labrador set the previous year.

"With this equipment, our volunteer firefighters will be able to do even more to protect not just the residents here in Charlottetown, but also visitors to Terra Nova National Park. These new SCBAs will ensure our dedicated firefighters can do their valuable work effectively and safely. It's great news for our firefighting capabilities and clearly shows that governments and communities can work together to achieve great things."
- Ralph Ford, Chair of Charlottetown Local Service District

Newfoundland and Labrador has 274 fire departments, supported by more than 6,000 firefighters, most of whom are volunteers. For more information on Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador, visit: //www.gov.nl.ca/fes/
