Basketball’s Carl English Earns Silver at Pan Am Games

Carl English of Paradise is the latest athlete from this province to earn a medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games, as he joined the Canadian men’s basketball team in their silver medal performance Saturday (July 26). Brazil took the gold with a score of 86-71.

"Congratulations to Carl English and the entire Canadian men’s basketball team for their performance at the Pan Am Games. This is an outstanding achievement and we are proud of Carl’s contributions to his team’s success. It is thrilling to see athletes who had their start in Newfoundland and Labrador competing, and excelling, alongside other world-class athletes.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

English, who is 34 and from Paradise, is a six-foot, five-inch shooting guard. He grew up in Patrick’s Cove and has played with the University of Hawaii and professionally in American and European leagues for several years. In 2014-15, he competed for AEK Athens of the Greek Basketball League.

"Carl English and the Canadian men’s basketball team have made the country proud with their silver medal win – especially after winning a 111-108 nail-biter over the United States on Friday. Carl now joins the five Newfoundland and Labrador athletes and two assistant coaches of the Canadian men’s softball team as a 2015 Pan Am Games medal recipient. As the Pan Am Games wind down, we now look forward to cheering on our 2015 Parapan Am athletes as they take centre stage next month.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Canadian men’s softball team earned Pan Am gold on Saturday, July 18, in a 2-1 win over Venezuela. The 2015 Parapan Am Games are scheduled to be held August 7-15. Competing athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador are Katarina Roxon of Stephenville (swimming), Kyle Payne of Cormack (football/soccer), and Liam Hickey of St. John’s (wheelchair basketball).
