Recognizing Athletic Excellence

Premier Congratulates Province’s Pan Am and Parapan Am Contingent

A number of Newfoundland and Labrador athletes and coaches will represent Team Canada and be among 7,600 competitors from the Americas and the Caribbean at the 2015 Pan Am Games (July 10-26) and Parapan Am Games (August 7-15) in Toronto. This province’s athletes and coaches will compete in softball, shooting, basketball, swimming, football/soccer, and wheelchair basketball.

The 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games athletes will compete at more than 30 venues located across Ontario.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Pan Am Games contingent consists of:

  • Ryan Boland of Goulds (softball)
  • Sean Cleary of Harbour Main (softball)
  • Brad Ezekiel of Harbour Main (softball)
  • Jason Hill of St. John’s (softball)
  • Stephen Mullaley of Freshwater (softball)
  • John Hill of St. John’s (assistant coach, softball)
  • Les Howey of Conception Bay South (assistant coach, softball)
  • Ben Taylor of St. John’s (shooting)
  • Carl English of Paradise (basketball)

Carl English (men’s basketball) was one of 16 athletes invited to try out for an opportunity to represent Canada at the games. Canada Basketball is scheduled to announce the final 12-man roster before July 18.

Parapan Am Games athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador are:

  • Katarina Roxon of Stephenville (swimming)
  • Kyle Payne of Cormack (football/soccer)
  • Liam Hickey of St. John’s (wheelchair basketball)

The Pan Am and Parapan Am Games in Toronto this year will mark the third time Canada has hosted the Pan Am Games. They were previously held in Winnipeg in 1967 and 1999. It also marks Canada’s first time as host of the Parapan Am Games.
