Provincial Government Recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
The Provincial Government is recognizing Monday, June 15, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The goal of this day is to raise awareness about the many forms of violence against older persons.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to building safe and supportive communities where older persons can live free of fear, exploitation and violence. On this day, we call on all residents of the province to join us in raising awareness and preventing violence against older persons.
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and Acting Minister Responsible for the Status of Women
Through the Violence Prevention Initiative, Respect Aging training is available across the province. This program helps service providers and anyone who lives or works with older persons to recognize, prevent and intervene in violence against older persons. Violence against older persons may be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, cultural, verbal or spiritual, and may also come in the forms of financial abuse and neglect.
All forms of violence are unacceptable and have long term, negative effects that impact the physical and emotional well-being of victims. It is incumbent on all of us to learn more about the types of elder abuse such as financial abuse and how they can be prevented, so that seniors in our communities are treated with the respect that they deserve.
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development
Many of the Regional Coordinating Committees Against Violence are holding events across the province to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, as part of the Violence Prevention Initiative. Contact information for each committee can be found in the backgrounder below. The Provincial Government, including all departments and agencies, is committed to preventing violence against all vulnerable populations by working with over 30 community partners to ensure all residents live in violence-free communities.
