Building Strong School Communities

Carbonear Academy Celebrates Official Opening

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Acting Minister of Education, joined Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board officials, students, staff and community representatives today to celebrate the official opening of Carbonear Academy, a $22 million K-8 school in the Conception Bay North community.

“Today we take the opportunity to officially celebrate new beginnings at Carbonear Academy, a state-of-the art school which provides the best possible programming opportunities for children in the Carbonear area. The educational experiences students will have here, the friends they will make, and the memories they will share, will last a lifetime. I offer my sincere congratulations to those who helped make this school a reality, and wish all involved many happy years in this beautiful facility.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Carbonear Academy is a state-of-the-art facility that includes a gymnasium, computer lab, technology education suite, multipurpose/lunch room, a library resource centre as well as designated classrooms for music, home economics, art and science. It is an environmentally-friendly building with energy-efficient features. The school is designed in accordance with the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design rating system, follows the Provincial Energy Plan, and features energy efficient and occupancy-based heating, lighting and ventilation control, as well as water conserving features.

“As we celebrate the official opening of this school, with its modern design and innovative learning environment, we are also reminded that a school is not just a building. It is the students, teachers, staff, parents and volunteers who bring it to life. I wish the entire school community success as they dedicate themselves to the pursuit of educational excellence, and to the preparation of our young people to become happy, healthy, caring, and engaged young citizens. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development was created to allow greater focus on early learning and this new school is an example of our commitment to give our children the best start possible.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Acting Minister of Education

Carbonear Academy is among 25 new schools which have been completed, or are in various stages of planning and construction, since 2004. Over the last decade, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $731 million in K-12 infrastructure to ensure students and teachers continue to enjoy safe and healthy learning environments.

“As Chair of the Board of Trustees and trustee for the region, I am excited to be a part of this official opening for the new school serving the students of Carbonear and Freshwater. Situated in an ideal location adjacent to numerous community and recreational amenities, such as a year-round swimming pool, a track and field complex, a soccer pitch and softball fields, this school provides our students with unique opportunities that I am confident will be enjoyed for years to come by the entire school community.”
- Milton Peach, Chair, Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board

As part of the multi-year education infrastructure development plan, over $95 million is allocated through Budget 2015 for K-12 infrastructure to address short and longer-term provincial needs. This funding will build on the already unprecedented level of investment that has seen 14 new schools completed, 11 more in various stages of planning or construction, 27 major extensions and renovation projects completed, and 13 more underway.
